I was visiting Warsaw Book Fair almost by mistake. I’ve been shooting short interview in a Warsaw’s National Stadium area and I discovered that huge banner with a Book Fair logo. Without thinking much I lined up in a queue to get my ticket. The event itself has numerous blog posts, reviews and comments about – hundreds of exhibitors from all over the world, thousands of books, meetings, talk-shows and many more.  I only mentioned Book Fair to give You a greater scope of where I got inspired to write this post.

Walking through tenths of booths with publications I accidentally (or not) turned left, right and again left and walked straight into publishers which I wasn’t expected to be there. To be honest I didn’t know this publisher exist at all! I’m talking about Wydawnictwo Element.

All of You probably might ask me why I picked this particular publisher from the vast amount of fancy booths? So the answer is simple and clear for me: Ken Robinson. I’m a big fan of sir Robinson’s research about education and creativity. He come up with various solutions on how to cure school system and make education thrive. His TEDx speech is absolutely No.1 for almost 27 millions of people around the globe.

The only problem with his publications was (and still is) a language barrier for Polish folks. Many native oldschool teachers are still English language illiterate. So Wydawnictwo Element made an official translations of Ken Robinson’s two stunning books: “Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative” and “The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything”. These books are one of my favorite and everyone who work with kids, and youth on an education level gotta read this and treat it like a 101 tutorial!

I met two originators of translation project and owners of the publishing house: Aleksander and Dominika. After a short brainstorm and sharing some basic informations I knew they are right people to be responsible for translations of British author. I love the idea which is behind their story:

After watching Sir. Ken Robinson at TED Conference, we decided straight away we must make an honest effort to enhance his great study to the wider audience. English language societies had an opportunity to become acquainted since 2001. This is enormous gap in education development between Western societies and East side of Europe.

We conclude that his studies should be a handbook for every single teacher in Poland who obviously are still way back behind the rest of education departments in Europe.

I truly agree with Dominika and Aleksander. Without sharing creative solutions education doesn’t make a sense. Fundamentals are important but the world is changing very fast. This means we need to shift our perception on education basics, reconsider them and attach them for present days. We need motivation. And these two young publishers certainly has that one. Big shout outs and fingers crossed for their future projects (upcoming publication of Ken Robinson’s book called: “Finding Your Element. How to Discover Your Talents and Passions and Transform Your Life”)

I hope young publishers like Wydawnictwo Elelemnt will play first fiddle in the game called Education System. Major changes has just started and there is no way to stop this phenomenon. Younger generation is getting more creative than oldschool members of education departments. While they been in a sleep mode for many years because of untouchable department facade, younger started to inspire some of them and Ken Robinson is the best example of it (he used to be a Professor of Arts Education at the University of Warwick).

So Poland: now You have Your chance to see more clear on how to prosper education system in native polish language. The question is not when we might apply those changes but what we’re going to do with these informations?
